監視塔を中心に、5棟の収容棟が放射状に広がる明治期の監獄スタイル「ハビランドシステム」構造です。
The facility has five cell blocks radiating outward from a central guard tower.
Setting confinement wards in a radial form with the watchhouse at its pivot has enabled the guards to oversee all five wards at a time.

・ジョン・ハビランド氏はイギリス生まれのアメリカ人建築家で、革新的な刑務所設計で知られています。（1792-1852）
不平等条約から脱却しようとしていた当時の日本にとって、監獄の建築は近代国家日本を世界に示す一つの手段でした。
The Meiji government sought to demonstrate that Japan was a modern nation governed by the rule of law to revise the unequal treaties with Western powers. As part of this initiative, the Five Great Meiji Prisons were constructed.

明治の五大監獄：千葉監獄、金沢監獄、奈良監獄、長崎監獄、鹿児島監獄。全貌をとどめているのは奈良のみです。
司法省の技師、山下啓次郎氏（ジャズピアニスト山下洋輔さんの祖父）が欧米の監獄を視察してこのスタイルにたどり着き、奈良監獄は1908年に完成しました。
All buildings were designed by architect Keijiro Yamashita (1868-1931), who worked on numerous courthouses and prison buildings for the then Justice Ministry. In visiting and exploring prisons in Europe and North America, Yamashita finally decided to create a brick structure with solitary cells, taking into account the material’s excellent fire resistance.
Most of the construction work was carried out by prisoners, and the bricks were supplied from kilns they built themselves.

少年非行が増えた戦後、更生・矯正を目的とする少年刑務所となり、老朽化と耐震性の問題により2017年に閉鎖しました。
Juvenile delinquency surged following the end of the war. The Nara Prison transitioned into Nara Juvenile Prison in 1946, serving as a correctional institution with a strong focus on rehabilitation and reformative education.

独居房などを10室つなぎ合わせた細長い48室が、ホテル「星のや奈良監獄」として生まれ変わりました。
Each of the 48 suites is a combination of 10 individual cells that independently measured 5 square meters. The elongated spaces now feature a bedroom, living room, and bathroom.

The room rate, including tax and service charges, comes to 147,000 yen ($910) per night. Meals are not included as part of the price.
敷地内にはミュージアムも併設されています。
The remaining cell block and the annex are now home to the Nara Prison Museum, shedding light on the lives of inmates and other aspects of the institution’s history.
