京都の茶道裏千家前家元の千玄室さんが8月14日、亡くなりました。
Famed tea grand master Sen Soshitsu XV died on Aug. 14. Sen Soshitsu XV was the 15th “iemoto” head of the Urasenke school of tea ceremony.He was 102.

He was born in Kyoto in 1923, the year of the Great Kanto Earthquake, as the eldest son of the 14th head of the Urasenke tea school. He was a descendant of the revered 16th-century sage Rikyu, who laid down the rules of the tea ceremony and elevated it to the level of art.

同志社大学時代に学徒出陣で海軍に入隊。
While a student at Doshisha University, he was drafted into the Imperial Japanese Navy through the student mobilization program during World War II.

As a survivor of Japan's wartime Kamikaze suicide program who saw many of his fellow pilots take off for one-way flights, Sen was a staunch anti-war advocate and devoted himself to “tea diplomacy.”

次期家元が若宗匠の格式を得るための伝統として、大徳寺で禅の修行に入ります。
In 1949, he was ordained at Daitokuji temple, the family’s ancestral temple in Kyoto’s Kita Ward.

その後、茶道具一式を持って渡米され、全米各地茶道を広めて廻られました。
In 1950, he became the “wakasosho” heir apparent, and began traveling across the United States to promote the way of tea.

In 1997, he became the first person in the tea ceremony world to receive the Order of Culture. In 2020, he was awarded the Commandeur of the French Legion of Honor. He also served as a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador.
戦争体験を踏まえて、「一盌（いちわん）からピースフルネスを」を提唱。70か国以上を300回以上歴訪し、「空飛ぶ家元」と呼ばれました。
Drawing on his wartime experiences, he dedicated his life to international exchanges and peace activities through the harmonious tea ceremony. Sen performed the tea ceremony more than 300 times in 70 countries to promote the art of Chado and global peace, earning him the nickname “flying tea master.”
