Long hair, youthful smile, thick glasses slightly askew: for decades, the black-and-white photo of one of Japan's most wanted fugitives has been a ubiquitous sight at police stations nationwide.

1970年代の連続企業爆破事件の関与で指名手配されていた桐島聡容疑者(70)を名乗る男が亡くなりました。

A man thought to be a suspect wanted for one of a series of terrorist bombings in Japan in the 1970s died Monday morning, an investigative source said.

The man recently confessed to being the alleged bomber Satoshi Kirishima, who was a member of an extreme left-wing group. 

He had long been wanted on suspicion of planting and detonating a homemade bomb in a building in Tokyo's Ginza district on April 19, 1975.

The man had been making outpatient visits to the hospital for about a year and was hospitalized earlier in January. He was undergoing treatment for terminal stomach cancer.

He managed to blend into society for decades under a false name.

He went under the radar with no health insurance, bank account, or driving license.

He revealed his true identity last Thursday, saying he wanted to draw the curtain on his life under his real name.

複数の親族とDNA型鑑定を行い、『親族として矛盾なし』との結果でしたが、親族は遺体の引き取りを拒否したそうです。

The DNA of the man was compared with those of multiple relatives of Kirishima. Some of the test results showed no contradiction in kinship.

遺体は逗子市内の火葬場で火葬されました(2月7日)
